Kunming Air Quality and Urban Noise Project
IVL's task in Sida financed project is to assist the
Yunnan Environmental Monitoring Centre Station (YEMCS)
and Kunming Environmental Monitoring Centre Station
(KEMCS) in upgrading the facilities for, as well as
skills and knowledge about, air quality management.
In order to detect the ambient air quality in Kunming
IVL's diffusive samplers have been used with continuously
measuring instruments.
IVL has in the project also developed and implemented
a new software system, EQMS. EQMS is a GIS-based software
that can store, analyse and present environmental data
of interest and simulate the cause and effect relationships
with regard to emissions and air quality.

Technical Assistance to Liaoning
This is EU's biggest environmental project in China
ever. IVL's main task in the project is to develop an
Environment Information System, which will integrate
ambient air quality data, water effluent and quality
data into a GIS-based decision tool. This tool will
be based on IVL's EQMS-system. The decision tool should
when finished be implemented at six local environmental
protection bureau within the Liaoning province and their
staff should be trained in handling the system. IVL
will also be responsible for improving the client's
general computer literacy and data security awareness.
The project starts in 1999 and will end in 2004.
Clean Technology and Waste Water Treatment
TAES and IVL have during the last years co-operated
in treatment of industrial waste water. The main parts
in Sida financed project is to transfer knowledge in
different ways to reduce environmental impact from industrial
production, and training in using pilot scale tests
to evaluate cost and effect of different treatment methods.
Partly based upon this experience TAES has designed
several full scale treatment plants.
A continued co-operation is planned, where more stress
will be given to Clean Technology in an opti-malcombination
with external treatment. In this project the participation
of equipment suppliers in different tests is welcomed.

Cleaner production
Liaoning is a province in China with a great deal
of heavy energy consuming industry, steel industry and
coal mining industry. Mantgomery Waston is a British/American
environmental consulting company. They are head contractor
for a EC-aid founded project to China, which is aiming
to improve the environmental impact in the province
of Liaoning. The project is emphasising on pollution
prevention, energy conservation and cleaner production.
IVL is a subcontractor to Montgomery Wston in this project
as instrumentation specialists for measurements of pollutants
in waste water. The project is planned to start 1999.

Inner Mongolia Lake Restoration Project
Inner Mongolia has a number of lakes, particularly
vulnerable to the eutrophication process. The lakes
are important production bases for fishery, and a source
of drinking, industrial, and agricultural water in the
area. These lakes are proven to be very important for
the entire ecological system in the area. The lake Wuliangshuhai
in Inner Mongolia receives a large amount of nutrients
with its inflow from the Hetao area of cultivated land.
Already 50% of the lake is covered by reed, caused mainly
by the eutrophication process.
This Sida/NORAD financed project is a co-operation
between the Inner Mongolia Environmental Science Institute
(IMESI), IVL and NIVA. The main goal is to produce a
control plan for the eutrophication problems of Lake
Wuliangsuhai. An additional goal is to qualify the Chinese
personnel in methods to carry out similar research and
restoration projects.
